Notification of Whenua Rāhui Overlay Classification and Protection Principles—Maud Island (Tom Shand Scientific Reserve) (Te Pākeha)

Pursuant to section 62(1)(a) of the Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō, Ngāti Kuia, and Rangitāne o Wairau Claims Settlement Act 2014 ("the Act"), the Minister of Conservation hereby notifies that the area described in the Schedule hereto has been declared to be subject to an overlay classification known as Whenua Rāhui by section 53 of the Act.

The provisions of the Act which relate to Whenua Rāhui are sections 53–71.

Pursuant to section 62(1)(b) of the Act, the Minister hereby notifies that the following protection principles are directed at the Minister of Conservation avoiding harm to, or the diminishing of, the Ngāti Kuia values related to Maud Island (Tom Shand Scientific Reserve) (Te Pākeha):

(a) Protection of wāhi tapu, indigenous flora and fauna and the wider environment within Maud Island (Tom Shand Scientific Reserve) (Te Pākeha);

(b) recognition of the mana, kaitiakitanga and tikanga of the Ngāti Kuia Iwi within Maud Island (Tom Shand Scientific Reserve) (Te Pākeha);

(c) respect for Ngāti Kuia Iwi tikanga and kawa within Maud Island (Tom Shand Scientific Reserve) (Te Pākeha);

(d) encouragement of the respect for the association of Ngāti Kuia Iwi with Maud Island (Tom Shand Scientific Reserve) (Te Pākeha);

(e) accurate portrayal of the association of Ngāti Kuia Iwi with Maud Island (Tom Shand Scientific Reserve) (Te Pākeha); and

(f) recognition of the relationship of Ngāti Kuia Iwi with the wāhi tapu and wāhi whakahirahira.
