Employment Relations Act 2000

Code of Employment Practice on Infant Feeding

Notice is hereby given that the Minister of Labour has approved the Code of Employment Practice on Infant Feeding for launch to the public.

The Minister of Labour is required by the Employment Relations Act 2000 ("the Act") to approve a Code of Employment Practice as soon as practicable after 1 April 2009.

The purpose of the code is to provide employers with guidance on how to fulfil their obligations concerning the provision of breastfeeding breaks and facilities under section 69Y of the Act.

The code includes suggestions about the types of issues that should be considered when negotiating an arrangement with an employee who wishes to breastfeed during working hours and also provides guidance on determining what arrangement would be reasonable and practicable in the circumstances.
