Southland Land District

Hāwea Island Island

One of two islands, commonly known as the “Outer Gilbert Islands”, south of Breaksea Island at the entrance to Breaksea Sound, Fiordland. NZTopo50 map CE04-Anchor Island, GR 042 317. Spelling alteration from Hawea Island (macron added to an official name) and replaces previous New Zealand Gazette, 24 September 1987, No. 163, page 4458. The official geographic name is now “Hāwea Island”.

Mount Pickering Mountain

Prominent mountain, at height 1650m, located in the Kepler Mountains 20km west of Te Anau. NZTopo50 map CD07-Manapouri, GR 642 635. New name for a feature not named. The official geographic name is now “Mount Pickering”.

Mount Tinsley Mountain

Prominent mountain, at height 1537m, located in the Kepler Mountains 15km west of Te Anau. NZTopo50 map CD07-Manapouri, GR 703 598. New name for a feature not named. The official geographic name is now “Mount Tinsley”.

Notice of Adopted Undersea Feature Names

Pursuant to sections 26 and 21(2) of the New Zealand Geographic Board (Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa) Act 2008, the New Zealand Geographic Board Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa (“the Board”) hereby gives notice of 85 adopted undersea features names.

These are now official geographic names and are specified in the first column of the Schedule below (“the Schedule”).

The generic feature type that they relate to is set out in the second column of the Schedule.

The description for each name is set out in the third column of the Schedule.

The Board’s final determination on these adopted undersea features names takes effect on 16 December 2010.

Antipodes Fracture Zone Fracture Zone 50°00.00'S, 176°00.00'W; 70°00.00'S, 125°00.00'W. Ross Dependency. Named in association with Antipodes Islands. Depicted on GEBCO 5.14.
Aucklands Escarpment Escarpment 55°00.00'S, 164°00.00'E; 49°00.00'S, 166°00.00'E. West of Auckland Islands. The slope that forms the western boundary of the Campbell Plateau. Descends to the Solander Trough and the Emerald Basin. Extends southwards to 750km from the edge of the continental shelf off Stewart Island. Depicted on GEBCO 5.14, NZOI Bathymetric map “Macquarie”.
Axthelm Seamount Seamount 65° 45.00'S, 168° 24.00'E. Ross Dependency. Depicted on GEBCO 5.14, NZOI Bathymetric map “Balleny”.
Campbell Escarpment Escarpment 53°57.00'S, 172°30.00'E. Campbell Plateau. The escarpment clearly defines the eastern margin of the Campbell Plateau. Depicted on GEBCO 5.14.
Central Basin Basin 70°50.00'S, 176°45.00'E; 71°40.00'S, 178°00.00'E; 72°40.00'S, 176°30.00'E; 72°45.00'S, 179°30.00'E; 71°00.00'S, 180°00.00'E. Ross Dependency. The feature is located midway between Adare Basin and Iselin Bank, and approximately in the centre of the Ross Sea margin. It also lies approximately on the northern extension of a geological rift under the continental shelf referred to as Central Trough. Depicted on GEBCO 5.18.
Charcot Ridge Ridge 66°06.00'S, 165°28.70'E; 66°12.00'S, 165°12.00'E; 67°00.00'S, 165°42.00'E. Balleny Islands, Ross Dependency. A NW–SE trending ridge, paralleling and 30km to the NE of the Balleny Islands. Depicted on GEBCO 5.14.
Davey Bank Bank 76°03.00'S, 166°18.00'E. Ross Dependency. The feature is on the continental shelf, approximately 15km long in north-south direction and 1km wide. Depicted on GEBCO 5.18.
Dolphin Seamount Seamount 39°28.16'S, 163°26.14'E. Lord Howe Rise. A large seamount that lies at the western edge of the Lord Howe Rise continental slope. Depicted on GEBCO 5.10, NZ 24.
East Adare Ridge Ridge 69°19.80'S, 172°15.00'E; 70°51.00'S, 173°24.00'E. Ross Dependency. An undersea ridge that borders the eastern side of the Adare Trough. Depicted on GEBCO 5.18.
Emerald Fracture Zone Fracture Zone 62°00.00'S, 170°00.00'E. Ross Dependency. An undersea fracture zone running the distance from the south-west corner of the Campbell Plateau to the northern tip of Iselin Bank. Depicted on SCAR #4225.
