Application to Deploy Satellite Tags on Marine Mammals

Pursuant to section 5(5) of the Marine Mammals Protection Act 1978, the Minister of Conservation notifies that he has received an application from Simon John Childerhouse on 22 May 2009 to:

  • deploy implantable satellite tags on six free-ranging Southern Right Whales (Balaena australis) at the Auckland Islands (50°S, 166°E), New Zealand.

The whales will not be captured or handled and tags will be deployed remotely from a research vessel.

This activity has the potential to disturb marine mammals and therefore will require a permit.

A copy of the application can be obtained from the Department of Conservation, Southern Islands Area Office, PO Box 743, Invercargill 9840.

Any person wishing to make a submission on this application can do so by writing to the Conservator, Department of Conservation, PO Box 743, Invercargill 9840, within 28 days after publication of this notice.

Unless a person making a submission states to the contrary in the submission, that person will be deemed to give his/her consent to the release, under the Official Information Act 1982, of all the information in the submission.
