Large lake east of Lake Wanaka, extending north-south for approximately 38km, fed principally by the Hunter River at the north, and draining into the Hāwea River (proposed spelling) at the south. Currently the feature has two official geographic names, Whanokao and Honokawa by New Zealand Gazette, 29 July 1948, No. 42, page 939, both published as separate entries. Whanokao appears on current mapping and is proposed to continue as the official geographic name for this feature. Honokawa is proposed to be discontinued as the official geographic name for this feature. 11 December 2009
