Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996
Pursuant to section 96B of the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996 (the Act),
the Environmental Risk Management Authority, on its own initiative, gives notice of the issue of
this Group Standard.
1 Title
Compressed Gas Mixtures (Toxic [6.1], Oxidising [5.1.2], Corrosive) Group Standard 2006
HSNO Approval Number
The HSNO Approval Number for this Group Standard is HSR002541.
2 Commencement
This Group Standard comes into force on 1 July 2006 and applies to substances under
section 96B(2)(a), (b) and (c) of the Act.
3 Scope of Group Standard
Substances covered by Group Standard
(1) This Group Standard applies to imported or manufactured compressed gas mixtures.
(2) A substance covered by this Group Standard must only be sold or supplied for use in a
place of work where members of the public do not have access to the substance.
(3) A substance referred to in subclause (1) must be a gas mixture that isβ
(a) an acute toxicant (HSNO 6.1B or 6.1C classification); and
(b) oxidising (HSNO 5.1.2A classification); and
(c) a skin corrosive (HSNO 8.2B or 8.2C classification).
(4) In addition to the hazards referred to in subclause (3), a substance may have any of the
following (but only the following) hazards:
(a) metallic corrosivity, HSNO 8.1A classification;
(b) eye corrosivity, HSNO 8.3A classification;
(c) eye irritancy, HSNO 6.4A classification;
(d) respiratory sensitisation, HSNO 6.5A classification;
(e) contact sensitisation, HSNO 6.5B classification;
(f) mutagenicity, HSNO 6.6A or 6.6B classification;
(g) carcinogenicity, HSNO 6.7A or 6.7B classification;
