Misuse of Drugs Act 1975

Medical Practitioners Who May Prescribe, Administer or Supply Controlled Drugs for the Purpose of Treating People With Drug Dependence

Pursuant to section 24 (7) (a) of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1975, I, David George Chaplow, acting under delegated authority from the Minister of Health, specify that

Dr Peter Harvey Griffiths, Doctors on Cashel, 7 Cashel Street, Christchurch; and

Dr Surendra Kumar Jayaswal, consultant psychiatrist, Hinetitama Alcohol and Drug Service, Hutt Valley District Health Board, Lower Hutt

are medical practitioners who may prescribe, administer or supply controlled drugs for the purposes of that section, with the following conditions:

(a) The prescription of controlled drugs for the treatment of dependence is limited to patients registered at the specified doctor’s practice who have been assessed as requiring substitution treatment for opioid dependence by a hospital or clinic specified under section 24 (7) of the Act; and

(b) authorisation of other medical practitioners to prescribe controlled drugs for the treatment of opioid dependence is limited to designated locums working in the authorising medical practitioner’s practice. Authorised medical practitioners may only prescribe controlled drugs for the treatment of opioid dependence to patients registered at the authorising medical practitioner’s practice, and may only do so with their written permission.
