Notice of Final Decisions to Assign Place Names in the Ross Sea Region, Antarctica
Notice is hereby given of the final decisions of the New Zealand Geographic Board Nga Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa to assign the
names stated in the first column of the Schedule below to the places described in the second column of the said Schedule and
that such decisions shall take effect on 25 February 2003.
Schedule
Churchill Mountains – New Zealand Submissions (38):
Alexander Cone
81°27´S, 156°05´E. A cone-shaped feature, 1978m, in the All-Blacks Nunataks, west of the
Churchill Mountains.
Black Icefalls
81°46´S, 157°14´E. A line of icefalls at the south margin of Chapman Snowfield, Churchill
Mountains. The icefalls extend south-west from Mount Massam to Vance Bluff.
Blake Massif
80°38´S, 158°00´E. A compact block of ridgelines without a prominent culminating summit,
rising to approximately 1800m on the south side of Byrd Glacier. The unit lies between Lowry
Massif to the north-east and Mandarich Massif to the south-west.
Bledisloe Glacier
81°22´S, 156°21´E. A glacier flowing north-west between All-Blacks Nunataks and Wallabies
Nunataks, west of the Churchill Mountains.
Bradshaw Peak
81°03´S, 158°34´E. A peak rising to 1640m, 4km south-east of Turk Peak, Churchill Mountains.
Situated on the south-west side of McLay Glacier.
Brown Buttress
81°41´S, 160°30´E. A wedge-shaped buttress rising to approximately 800m, located near the
head of Dickey Glacier, which flows into Beaumont Bay.
Carr Crest
80°38´S, 159°23´E. A rock summit rising to 1200m in the northern extreme of the Churchill
Mountains. The feature is 12km east south-east of Roberts Pike and overlooks Couzens Bay due
east.
Couzens Saddle
80°31´S, 159°35´E. A saddle rising to approximately 500m, between Miscast Nunataks and
Mount Madison at west and east, and Byrd Glacier and Couzens Bay at north and south.
Erina Nunatak
81°21´S, 153°02´E. A nunatak rising to 1791m in the Lonewolf Nunataks, west of the Churchill
Mountains.
Farmer Glacier
81°47´S, 159°48´E. A glacier flowing north-west into Starshot Glacier, and located between
Mount McKerrow at north and Thompson Mountain at south, at the southern end of Surveyors
Range.
Fraser Nunatak
81°47´S, 155°55´E. A nunatak rising to 2070m, 22km south-west of Wilhoite Nunataks and west
of the Churchill Mountains.
Gamble Glacier
81°06´S, 156°45´E. A glacier flowing north-west from Chapman Snowfield, and located between
Green Nunatak at south-west and Keating Massif at north-east, Churchill Mountains.
Geddes Crag
81°32´S, 155°47´E. A crag immediately south of All-Blacks Nunataks, 10km north-west of
Rutland Nunatak.
Grae Cliff
81°20´S, 152°55´E. A cliff at approximately 1600m in the Lonewolf Nunataks, west of the
Churchill Mountains.
Green Nunatak
81°07´S, 156°34´E. A nunatak rising to approximately 1800m at the northern extreme of the
Wallabies Nunataks, west of the Churchill Mountains.
Howard-Williams Point
81°26´S, 161°25´E. Prominent point extending into Ross Ice Shelf, located just north of
Beaumont Bay, north-east of Surveyors Range.
Jones Buttress
81°37´S, 160°34´E. A wedge-shaped feature similar to Brown Buttress. Located 3km north of
Brown Buttress, where it juts out from the east side of Surveyors Range into Dickey Glacier.
Keating Massif
81°00´S, 156°45´E. A rugged mainly ice-covered massif, 20km long, rising to approximately
2370m, and lying north-west. It is located at the southern edge of the head of Byrd Glacier. The
feature includes Mount Fries and forms the south-western boundary of Zeller Glacier, Churchill
Mountains.
Lee Glacier
81°15´S, 159°07´E. A glacier flowing south-east into Jorda Glacier, Churchill Mountains. Mount
Frost and Mount Coley are located at its head.
Lowe Peak
81°40´S, 161°22´E. A peak rising to 1060m, 5km south-west of Mount Kolp, at the north-west
end of Nash Range.
MacFarlane Bluff
81°28´S, 155°36´E. A bluff, above 1800m, in the All-Blacks Nunataks, west of the Churchill
Mountains.
