Animal Products (Ancillary and Transitional Provisions) Act 1999

Approval for the Use of a Drug or Substance for the Prevention or Treatment of Disease in Bees
Notice No. 1196

  1. Section 62 (1) of the Animal Products (Ancillary and Transitional Provisions) Act 1999 provides that “No person may use any drug, substance, or mixture of substances for the prevention or treatment of any disease in bees, other than a drug for the time being approved for that purpose pursuant to subsection (2).”

  2. Section 62 (2) of the Animal Products (Ancillary and Transitional Provisions) Act 1999 provides that “The Minister may from time to time, by notice in the New Zealand Gazette, approve the use, subject to such conditions as the Minister specifies, of any specified drug for the prevention or treatment of any specified disease.”

Pursuant to section 62 of the Animal Products (Ancillary and Transitional Provisions) Act 1999, I approve the use of the compound “Oxalic Acid Dihydrate” for the prevention or treatment of varroa (Varroa Jacobsoni) subject to the following conditions:

  • Use of the product is limited to HortResearch staff and those identified in the Pesticides Board approval P05882, who must operate in all respects as if the product was a pesticide with an experimental use permit under the Pesticides Act 1979.
  • The formulation must comply with that approved by the Pesticides Board (Reference No. P05882).
  • Use must be in accordance with the directions of the Pesticides Board.
  • The approval is limited to a quantity of 200 grams and expires on 1 January 2002.

  • The approval is limited to a quantity of 26 litres and expires on 1 January 2002.
