Notice of Publication of Annual Report and Statement of Corporate Intent—AgriQuality New Zealand Limited

Pursuant to section 17 of the State-Owned Enterprises Act 1986, notice is hereby given that AgriQuality New Zealand Limited has delivered to the Minister for State Owned Enterprises its annual report for the year ended 30 June 1999, containing its financial statements and audit report for the period, and its statement of corporate intent for the period ending 30 June 2000 and the 2 succeeding financial years. AgriQuality New Zealand Limited has, with the consent of the Minister for State Owned Enterprises, published the annual report and statement of corporate intent.

A Proposed New Standard for Genetically Modified Foods

On Friday, 22 October 1999, Australian and New Zealand Health Ministers considered a draft new standard for genetically modified foods (GMF), which incorporates labelling for all GMFs. Ministers asked that the draft standard be publicly released. Written submissions on the draft standard should be received by Wednesday, 15 December 1999.

Call for Submissions Applications to Approve Certain Genetically Modified Foods

The authority has made preliminary assessments of the following applications for genetically modified foods, accepted them for further consideration and will now make full assessments of them. The foods will be assessed for safety for human consumption in accordance with the authority’s approved safety assessment criteria. To assist in this process you are invited to present written submissions to the authority, including the potential regulatory impact on consumers, industry and government, by Wednesday, 12 January 2000.

Call for Submissions—Inquiry Into a Previous Decision Relating to Genetically Modified Foods (Proposal P200).

The authority previously made a recommendation to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Council under section 37 of the Australia New Zealand Food Authority Act 1991 relating to the exemption of foods from the commencement date of Standard A18—Foods Produced Using Gene Technology. This involved the authority making a recommendation to the council as a matter of urgency and to omit to carry out public consultation at that time. The authority is now bound to undertake an inquiry into the recommendation, and you are now invited to present written submissions to the Authority on this matter by Wednesday, 15 December 1999.

• Sulphur Dioxide on Fresh Cut Avocados (A391). An application to extend the use of the preservative sulphur dioxide in fresh-cut avocado.

Matters Before Council

The authority has completed inquiries into the variations to standards prepared at full assessment of the following applications and has made recommendations to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Council that the variations be adopted into the Food Standards Code.

• Swiss Raw Milk Cheeses (A357).
