the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Council that they be adopted into the Food Standards Code:

Maximum Residue Limits (A347) An application to amend Australian Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) for a number of agricultural chemicals as currently prescribed in the Food Standards Code. Food sold in New Zealand which is either domestically produced or imported (other than from Australia) must comply with the MRL provisions in the New Zealand Food Regulations 1984. Food imported from Australia must comply with either the New Zealand MRLs or the Australian MRLs.

Sulphur Dioxide on Longans (A351) An application to permit the fumigation of longans with sulphur dioxide to a level of 10 mg/kg in the edible aril and require labelling of unpackaged longans treated with sulphur dioxide.

Folate / Neural Tube Defects (NTD) Health Claims (P192) A proposal to include further products on the register of approved products to carry a folate / NTD health claim.

Nationally Uniform Food Safety Standards (P145 and P160) Proposals to introduce nationally uniform food safety standards in Australia. These standards do not apply to food produced in New Zealand.

Amendment No. 42 to the Food Standards Code

Australia New Zealand Food Authority Variations to the Food Standards Code (Amendment No. 42)

1. Preamble

The variations set forth in the Schedule below are variations to the Food Standards Code (hereinafter called “the Code”) which was published by the National Health and Medical Research Council in the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette, No. P 27, on 27 August 1987, and which has been varied from time to time.

The Schedule contains variations adopted by the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Council in December 1998.

These variations are published pursuant to section 32 of the Australia New Zealand Food Authority Act 1991.

2. Citation

These variations may be collectively known as Amendment No. 42 to the Code.

3. Commencement

These variations commence on the date of publication of this Gazette. Item [1.] will cease to have effect on 13 February 2000.

Schedule

[1.] Standard A1 is varied by omitting the table to subclause (19)(e) and substituting—

Eggs Contains at least 40 micrograms folate. (b) the recommendation that women consume a minimum of 400 micrograms folate per day in at least the month before and at least the first 3 months following conception.
Fruit Other foods
Avocado Contains at least 40 micrograms folate and not more than—
Grapefruit (A) 14 g fat, of which no more than 5 g is saturated fat; and
Orange (B) 500 mg sodium; and
Legumes (C) 10 g in total of added sugars and honey.
