The Australia New Zealand Food Authority advises progress on the following application and proposal for the development or variation of standards in the Australian Food Standards Code.

Matters at Inquiry

The authority will conduct inquiries into the variations to standards prepared at full assessment of the following applications and proposal:

Omnibus of Amendments (P151). A proposal to correct minor inconsistencies, clarify the intent of clauses or update references to certain specifications in the Australian Food Standards Code.

In respect to this proposal the authority is satisfied that the proposal raises issues of minor significance and complexity and that to omit to invite public submissions prior to making a full assessment would not adversely affect the interests of any person or body. An application for a review of this decision may be made to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal by any person whose interests are affected by the decision to omit to invite public submissions prior to the authority making a full assessment.

Edible Coatings on Minimally Processed Fruits and Vegetables (A319). An application from the Australian Food Industry Science Centre to permit the use of the modifying agents listed in Group I (vegetable gums), Group II (mineral salts) and Group III (food acids) of Table 1 of Standard A10; sorbic acid, and ascorbic acid as components of edible coatings on minimally processed fruit and vegetable products. The use of erythorbic acid as an alternative antioxidant to ascorbic acid is also proposed.

You are invited to present written submissions to the authority on matters relevant to these inquiries, including the potential regulatory impact on consumers, industry and government, by 14 June 1997.
