Open Season for Game in Fish and Game Regions
North Island and South Island
The Minister of Conservation declares an open season for game in the Fish and Game Regions, subject to the schedule of game licences and fees prescribed in the Wildlife Regulations 1955 (as amended by the Wildlife Regulations 1955, Amendment No 12 and set out for public information in the Third Schedule hereto), and subject to the conditions specified in the Second Schedule hereto, except in the closed game areas published in the supplement to the New Zealand Gazette of 28 March 1985, and subject to any amendments in any subsequent Gazette notice and in this notice.
The attention of gamebird hunters and others is drawn to the daily game possession limits set forth in the First Schedule hereto and to the provisions of the Wildlife Act 1953 and the Wildlife Regulations 1955.
New Zealand Game Bird Habitat Stamp
Pursuant to section 19A (1) of the Wildlife Act 1953, the Minister of Conservation requires that a game bird habitat stamp be affixed to every licence to hunt or kill game.
Pursuant to section 19A (2) (a) (i) and 19A (2) (a) (ii) of the Wildlife Act 1953 the Minister of Conservation approves the following form of the 1996 New Zealand Game Bird Habitat Stamp:

The 1996 New Zealand Game Bird Habitat Stamp has a face value of ten dollars ($10.00). Pursuant to regulation 4 of the New Zealand Game Bird Habitat Stamp Regulations 1993 only a fee of one dollar ($1.00) shall be payable in respect of every game bird habitat stamp supplied in respect of a licence to hunt or kill game.
First Schedule
Except where all game is labelled with the following details:
(a) The name and address of the person by whom the game was taken;
(b) The number of the licence to hunt or kill game held by the person by whom the game was taken;
(c) The name of the Fish and Game Region by which that licence was issued;
(d) The name of the Fish and Game Regions in which the game was taken; and
(e) The date on which the game was taken;
No person shall have in possession on any one day game in excess of the following numbers:
North and South Island
Saturday 4 May 1996: The number of game birds specified in the Second Schedule of this notification as the daily bag limit for the Fish and Game Region in which the game was taken. Sunday 5 May 1996: Twice the number of game birds specified for Saturday 4 May 1996.
Every subsequent day: The number of game birds specified in the Second Schedule of this notification as the daily bag limit for the Fish and Game Region in which the game is taken.
Waiver of Restrictions on Baiting, and Methods of Taking Game
Baiting for Waterfowl
Pursuant to section 17 of the Wildlife Act 1953, the Minister of Conservation approves persons to hunt or kill game of the family Anatidae (waterfowl) during the open season for game in the Fish and Game Regions named hereto, where food has been cast, thrown, placed or planted during the current open season for game or during the thirty (30) days immediately prior to the open season for game, subject to the conditions specified below.

- Central South Island
- Eastern
- Hawkes Bay
- Nelson/Marlborough
- North Canterbury
- Northland
- Otago
- Southland
- Taranaki
- Wellington
- West Coast
Magazine Shotguns
Pursuant to section 18 (1) (c) (iii) of the Wildlife Act 1953, the Minister of Conservation approves persons to hunt or kill Canada geese within the Fish and Game Regions named hereto, with any shotgun of a calibre 12 gauge or less having a magazine of any type not adjusted in accordance with regulations made under this Act, and capable of holding more than one shell.
A. This approval shall apply only during the period of the open season for game following 1st June 1996 for the purpose of hunting only Canada geese. To be in possession of any game bird other than Canada geese while possessing, using or being in charge of a magazine shotgun not adjusted in accordance with regulations made under this Act, and capable of holding more than one shell, is to be in breach of the Act. The approval is subject to the conditions specified below.
