  1. Closed Waters/Catch and Release—Trout
    Period of closure
    Rangitata River and tributaries above white posts on the riverbanks at Turn Again Point, also known as Red Rocks Bluff, EXCEPT when fishing with artificial fly and undertaking catch and release. Catch and release requires that trout taken within these waters must be returned immediately with as little injury as possible to the waters from which they were taken

  1. Authorised Tackle
    5.1 No licence holder shall in fishing for or taking sportsfish, use more than one assembled rod and running line.

5.2 When playing a sports fish a gaff may be used to secure or land that fish.

5.3 No licence holder when fishing for sports fish shall use—
5.3.1 More than 2 lures or baits.
5.3.2 Any lead or weight (other than hooks as permitted elsewhere in this notice) attached below or as to hang below any lure or bait.
5.3.3 Any hook which has a gape greater than 14 mm between the point and the nearest part of the shank.
5.3.4 In any water in which only artificial fly is permitted, any lead or weight other than the necessary weight of line, cast and fly.

5.3.5 Any artificial fly having more than one hook or having a multiple hook.

5.3.6 Any wire, either plain or twisted, except when trolling in Lakes Waitaki, Aviemore, Benmore, Ruataniwha, Ohau, Pukaki, or Tekapo.

5.3.7 In conjunction with any spoonbait or artificial minnow, any lead or weight affixed to the trace or line at a distance of less than 38 cm above the lure.

5.3.8 Any unsportsmanlike device or method.

  1. Foul Hooking of Fish
    6.1 No licence holder when fishing for sportsfish shall—
    6.1.1 Foulhook or attempt to foulhook any sportsfish;
    Provided it shall be a defence to the charge for any person charged with a breach of this subclause, if that person proves that he or she was attempting to take the fish by hooking it from within the mouth, and that any sports fish taken otherwise than by hooking it from within the mouth was returned immediately or was in the process of being returned immediately with as little injury as possible to the waters from which it was taken.

6.1.2 Continue to fish on any day after having foulhooked three sports fish, even though any such sports fish have been returned immediately in accordance with the previous clause 6.1.1.

  1. Boats and Flotation Devices
    7.1 Fishing from boats or flotation devices is prohibited in:
    Lake Camp
    Lake Denny
    Lake Donn
    Lake Emily
    Kellands Pond
    Lake Roundabout
    Lake Spider
    Wairepo Arm of Lake Ruataniwha

7.2 Fishing from any unmoored boat or flotation device is prohibited in:
Lake Emma
Maori Lakes
Lake McGregor
Lake Middleton

7.3 Fishing from a boat or flotation device in any lake within 100 metres of any person already fishing from the shore of that lake is prohibited.

7.4 Fishing from a boat or flotation device while using natural bait is prohibited in:
Lake Benmore
Lake Ohau

  1. Casting Restrictions, Specific Baits and Lures, Restrictions
    8.1 Casting
    No licence holder shall cast other than from the reel or retrieve other than by winding the reel—
    8.1.1 From 1 January to 30 April, in the Opihi River or its tributaries, when using anything other than:
    Artificial fly, or
    Natural bait, or
    More than one bait when any weight is attached, or
    More than one hook (single or multiple)

    8.1.2 In the Ashburton, Rangitata, or Orari Rivers except when:
    Using natural bait (except where this is prohibited) or Artificial fly fishing or
    Fishing with an artificial fly (the total weight of which must not exceed 28 grams) seaward of a line drawn between two poles situated on either side of the upstream limit of the estuarine area.

8.2 Specific Baits
No licence holder when fishing for sportsfish shall—
8.2.1 From 1 October to 30 April, use, other than when fishing with natural bait in the Ashburton, Rangitata, or Orari Rivers, or their tributaries,
More than one lure or bait when any weight is attached, or
More than one hook (single or multiple)

8.2.2 With any natural bait, use:
More than one such bait, or
More than three single hooks, or
Two single and one triple

  1. Artificial Fly Only Waters
    Licence holders may only use artificial fly in the following waters or their tributaries:

    Lakes
    Lake Clearwater
    Lake Denny
    Lake Donn
    Lake Emily
    Maori Lakes
    Lake McGregor
    Lake Merino
    Lake Poaka
    Lake Roundabout
    Lake Spider
