Education Act 1964

Science in the New Zealand Curriculum

Notice

Pursuant to section 75 of the Education Act 1964, as amended by section 5 of the Education Amendment Act (No. 2) 1982, the Minister of Education hereby prescribes as from 1 January 1995 the syllabus for Junior to Form 2 classes of primary schools as described below:

Science in the New Zealand Curriculum

This syllabus defines aims and objectives for science education in New Zealand primary and secondary schools. It sets out in progressive levels, achievement objectives for science education in each of the strands: Developing Scientific Skills and Attitudes; Making Sense of the Nature of Science and its Relationship to Technology; Making Sense of the Physical World; Making Sense of the Living World; Making Sense of the Material World; Making Sense of Planet Earth and Beyond. It describes the ways in which the essential skills of the national curriculum will be taught and learned through science education.

Copies of Science in the New Zealand Curriculum have been issued to all primary teachers and to all secondary teachers of science. Further copies may be obtained from Learning Media Limited, P.O. Box 3293, Wellington, at a cost of $24.95 per copy.

The syllabuses known as: Science Syllabus and Guide—Primary to Standard 4 (1978), and the syllabus Science for Forms I and II (1967) referred to in the syllabus notice made under the Education Act 1964 and published in the New Zealand Gazette, 19 May 1983, No. 66, page 1561, are hereby revoked as from 31 December 1994, as are all official sanctions of the forms 1 and 2 sections of the draft syllabuses for forms 1–5 science published and distributed to schools in 1978 and 1989.
