Government Appointments.
LEFT COLUMN
His Excellency the Governor has been pleased to appoint:
John Thomas Marriott, Esq. ... to be a Justice of the Peace for the Colony of New Zealand.
William Rolleston, Esq., M.A. ... to be Under-Secretary for the Native Department.
The following promotions and appointments in the Civil Service are notified:
- John White ... Inspector of Schools, Auckland
- George Graham ... Chief Clerk, Post Office
Further appointments in the Armed Constabulary Force:
- Robert Carey ... Sergeant-Major, No. 1 Division
- Henry Shafto Harrison ... Sub-Inspector, Canterbury District
Notices to Mariners.
Notice is hereby given that the Lighthouse on Pencarrow Head will be lit every evening at sunset from the 15th of February, 1861.
Vessels entering the harbor are requested to keep mid-channel and to observe the signals at the signal station.
Bankruptcy Notices.
In the Estate of Samuel Brown, of Dunedin, Merchant:
Notice is given that Samuel Brown, having filed his petition for liquidation, a first meeting of creditors will be held at the office of Messrs. Smith and Partners, Dunedin, on the 20th day of February, 1861.

His Excellency the Governor has been pleased to approve of the following promotions in the Militia:
- Captain John Taine ... to be Major
- Lieutenant Edward Williams ... to be Captain
- Ensign Frederick James Moore ... to be Lieutenant
Public Works.
Tenders for the construction of a bridge over the Manawatu River at Foxton are hereby invited. Plans and specifications may be seen at the office of the Provincial Engineer, Wellington.
Sealed tenders, addressed to the Under-Secretary of Public Works, are to be forwarded by the 15th of March next.
