- Nutrition, physiology, genetics, health, welfare, diseases and pests of ruminant animals for the purposes of improving or diversifying animal production and products.
Output Class 9: Trees and Plantation Management Systems
- Assessment, development and management of tree species, especially alternatives to radiata pine, including indigenous plantation forestry, to meet future market needs and enhance the quality of the environment.
- Description and analysis of human and social factors and interactions, particularly Maori, in the forestry industry, and relationships between the industry, recruitment, skill base, safety and retention.

- Enhancement of natural populations of harvested species through biological, chemical and physical assessment of water environments, aquaculture and biotechnology.
- Evaluation and development of improved systems and processes for aquaculture.
Output Class 11: Meat, Meat Processing and Products
- Seafood storage, handling, transport and processing emphasising fish species and products specific to New Zealand.
- Description and analysis of human and social factors and interactions, particularly Maori, in the meat and fish processing industry, and relationships between the industry and recruitment, skill base, safety and retention of people.
Output Class 12: Dairy Processing, Storage Techniques and Products
- Development of new techniques for quantifying the functional, nutritional and therapeutic properties and components of dairy products.
Output Class 13: Fruit, Crops and other Food and Beverage Processing and Products
- Evaluation and development of post-harvest disinfestation systems that are of quarantine importance for crops, horticultural and food exports and enhance the image of New Zealand products.
- Strategic generic food research which will underpin New Zealand’s food industry and increase the competitiveness of products on international markets; including meat, fish dairy products, cereals, legumes, fruit and vegetables.
Output Class 14: Fibre, Textile and Skin Processing and Products
- Description and analysis of the physical and chemical properties of skins and natural fibres to better meet processing and consumer needs.
- Development of processes to improve skin processing and the quality of skin products.
Output Class 15: Wood and Paper Processing
- Development of new and improved solid wood products and processes, from radiata pine, that add value in New Zealand.
Output Class 16: Materials, Industrial Processes and Products
- Development of processes for adding value to products from local feedstocks, including waste and minerals.
Output Class 19: Construction
- Architecture, processes and products which minimise consumption of energy and enhance the environment, health and safety of occupants in both the construction and use of buildings.
Output Class 20: Commercial and Trade Services
- Development of new and improved information, technologies and processes that enhance New Zealand’s international trade (including services and tourism).
- New and improved technologies and processes for improved managerial communication, problem solving and decision making in both quantitative and qualitative dimensions.
- Development and implementation of new and improved processes, systems and products for measurement related to quality conformance and competitiveness in products and services.
Output Class 21: Energy
- New and improved processes, systems and products for increased efficiency in the use and conservation of energy, alternative and renewable sources of energy including solar, wind and geothermal energy.
- Social research, including energy economics and development of sustainable energy strategies.
Output Class 22: Transport Services
- Enhancement of safety in transport of people and goods; including behavioural research.
- Energy efficient and environmentally sustainable transport systems.
Output Class 23: Information and Communication Services
- Development of new and improved processes, systems and products for maintaining privacy, security and confidentiality of information transmitted via electronic networks.
