Marine Mammals Protection Act 1978

Application to Capture and Keep in Captivity Dolphins and a Leopard Seal

The Minister of Conservation has received an application from Hawke’s Bay marineland and Aquarium Board for a permit to capture and keep in captivity at the Napier Marineland the following animals:

(a) 6 common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) 2 to be caught immediately and 4 (2 females and 2 males) at a later date to form the nucleus of a breeding herd when suitable breeding facilities have been established; and

(b) 1 leopard seal (Hydrurga leptonyx).

More detailed information on the application, including methods of capture, and plans and specifications of the proposed dolphin breeding facility can be viewed at all Department of Conservation Conservancy offices and head office.

In accordance with section 5 of the Marine Mammals Protection Act 1978, the Minister of Conservation seeks written submissions in support of and objections against this application. Such submissions should be forwarded to: The Regional Conservator, Department of Conservation, P.O. Box 644, Napier, within 28 days of the publication date of this notice.

To assist analysis of submissions the public are requested to provide separate comment on the dolphin and leopard seal proposals, and to structure their submissions on both species under the following broad subject headings: Capture Methods; Existing and Proposed Facilities; Health and Welfare; Ethical Issues, and Other Matters.

Pursuant to section 32 of the Defence Act 1990, Her Excellency the Governor-General has approved the following appointments, promotions, extensions, transfers, resignations, and retirements of officers of the New Zealand Army.

REGULAR FORCE

Appointments to Commission

The following are appointed to commissions in the rank of Lieutenant and Quartermaster, with seniority from 15 August 1988 and effect from the date shown:

Warrant Officer Class I Walter Tapuariki Wharewera, The Corps of Royal N.Z. Engineers, 1 October 1990.

Warrant Officer Class II Michael James Kerr, Royal N.Z. Corps of Signals, 1 November 1990.
