Westland Bank Community Trust
Annual Report for the 1990–91 Year
Chairperson: James Keenan, Hokitika.
Trustees: Stanley Dawson, Hokitika; Jean Doland, Hokitika; Peter Kerridge, Greymouth; Graham Williams, Greymouth; Peter Roselli, Westport; Jean Dellaca, Westport; and Sheila Thomas, Reefton.
The Westland Bank Community Trust fulfilled its purpose of distributing funds for charitable, cultural, philanthropic, recreational and other purposes beneficial to the Buller/West Coast community by disbursing the sum of $121,455 to 204 organisations as scheduled in the annual accounts. The trust has therefore granted a total of $175,242 to 334 organisations since its inception on 1 June 1988. This represents an average grant of just in excess of $524.
Investment of Capital
In accordance with the trust’s policy to provide for inflation the capital of the trust was increased from $3 million to $3.15 million and was invested at good rates of interest varying from 11.85 percent for a term of 180 days to 14.4 percent for a term of 6 months. In addition and in line with our responsibility under the Trustees Act to invest prudently, the trust spread its investments so that instead of having all the capital invested with Westland Bank Limited; at 31 March 1991 the investments were placed with Westland Bank Limited, Postbank, National Bank, Westpac and the Rural Bank with the terms varying from 3 months to 4 years, the latter term being with the Rural Bank which offered an interest rate of 13.05 percent at a time when short-term interest rates were falling quite sharply.
Trust Membership
During the year Mary Reynolds of Westport tendered her resignation as a trustee due to personal reasons and was replaced by Jean Dellaca. The Minister of Finance also appointed Stanley Dawson of Hokitika to replace John Stott.
Meetings
The trust held 4 ordinary meetings during the financial year in addition to the public meeting which was held in the Westland District Council Cultural Room, Hokitika on Tuesday, 17 July 1990.
