Notice of Prohibition—Electrical Soldering Irons
- Pursuant to regulation 8 of the Electrical Wiring Regulations 1976, notice is hereby given that the apparatus described below may, in my opinion constitute an electrical hazard and is unsuitable for use in New Zealand.
Description
Soldering irons intended for connections to a supply exceeding 32V AC or 50V DC that have exposed metal parts, which are not earthed or separated from live parts by earthed metal or by double insulation.
These soldering irons may have the extra hazard of allowing access to live parts without the use of a tool.
- The possible faults that have been revealed as a result of examinations made by the Ministry of Energy on a number of soldering irons are:
(i) The electric soldering irons have exposed metal parts that are not earthed, which could result in the metal accidentally becoming alive.
(ii) Access to live terminals, within the handle section, may be gained with out the use of a tool exposing live parts to the touch. This is of concern particularly as this type of equipment is often used by children in hobby construction activities.
The faults listed above may not be the only aspects of electrical safety not satisfied by these units.
