Assumption of the Office of Administrator of the Government by The Honourable Sir Thomas Eichelbaum, Chief Justice

A PROCLAMATION

Whereas Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was graciously pleased, by Letters Patent passed under the Seal of New Zealand, and bearing date the 28th day of October 1983, to provide that, whenever the office of Governor-General is vacant or the holder of the office is for any reason unable to perform all or any of the functions of the office, those functions should be performed by the Administrator of the Government:

And whereas His Excellency the Governor-General, The Most Reverend Sir Paul Alfred Reeves, is absent from the seat of Government and unable to perform all the functions of the office of Governor-General:

Now, therefore, I, The Honourable Sir Johann Thomas Eichelbaum, Knight Grand Cross of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, Chief Justice of New Zealand, hereby proclaim and declare that, having taken, in the manner prescribed by the Letters Patent, the oaths prescribed by the Letters Patent, I have on the 22nd day of February 1989 assumed office as Administrator of the Government.

Given under the hand of His Excellency the Administrator of the Government, and issued under the Seal of New Zealand, this 22nd day of February 1989.

Departure of the Governor-General Overseas and Assumption of Office by the Administrator of the Government

His Excellency the Governor-General, the Most Reverend Sir Paul Reeves, G.C.M.G., G.C.V.O., accompanied by Her Excellency Lady Reeves, the Honourable Russell Marshall, Minister of Foreign Affairs and with members of the Household in attendance, departed from Auckland at 11.59 p.m. on Tuesday 21 February for Tokyo, to attend the State funeral for His Late Majesty Emperor Showa of Japan.

Following the departure of His Excellency, the Chief Justice of New Zealand, the Honourable Sir Thomas Eichelbaum, G.B.E., has assumed the office of the Administrator of the Government in accordance with clause XII of the Letters Patent constituting the office of Governor-General.
