(18) Horticultural Management (Amenity Horticulture)

The use of management procedures in amenity horticultural situations. Management objectives.
Information sources. Planning, decision making, and financial control techniques. The use of land, labour and capital.

Budgeting.

Project costing including social benefit evaluation. Record keeping. Accounting practices.
Banking and insurance.

Monitoring production programmes. Stock control. Labour organisation and management. Staff training. Legislation affecting amenity horticulture.
Use of computers in amenity horticulture.

(19) Project

A report on a topic of the candidate’s choice, subject to the requirements in clause 7 (12). The report should be approximately 3000 words in length, and of a standard suitable for submission to a horticultural journal.

(20) Oral and Practical Examination II (Amenity Horticulture) (1 day—two 3-hour examinations)

A more advanced knowledge of subject 14 topics.
Plant propagation—techniques, facilities and equipment. Media disinfestation.
Instruments and equipment used in mapping, surveying and levelling and their use and care.
Methods employed and preparation of estimates for constructional work, e.g. the cut and fill required to level a given area, the amount of material required for a specified path, road, wall, etc.
Drainage—types, installation.
Tree maintenance, transplanting, staking and surgery. Pruning of plants used in amenity horticulture.
Preparing and packing flowers and nursery stock for transit. Harvesting and storing seeds.
Plant identification (botanical and common names, family, origin, methods of propagation and horticultural use).
Weed identification and control.
Pests of amenity plants—identification and control. The candidate shall submit a plan (town work) of a garden, park or nursery for discussion on planning, design and layout. The quality of workmanship to be examined (10 per cent of total mark).

(21) Thesis

As prescribed in clause 8 of this scheme.

SECOND SCHEDULE

Scheme for the Examination of Candidates for the National Certificate in Horticulture (Fruit Production), the National Diploma in Horticulture (Fruit Production), and the National Diploma with Honours in Horticulture (Fruit Production) of the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture Incorporated

  1. In this scheme, unless the context otherwise requires—

“Certificate” means the National Certificate in Horticulture (Fruit Production) granted by the Institute.

“Diploma” means the National Diploma in Horticulture (Fruit Production) granted by the Institute.

“Diploma with Honours” means the National Diploma in Horticulture with Honours (Fruit Production) granted by the Institute.

“Examining Board” means the Examining Board of the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture Incorporated.

“Fruit” means apples, pears, quinces, peaches, nectarines, apricots, plums, cherries, kiwifruit, tamarillos, passionfruit, avocados, all citrus fruits, bacobas, casanas, cherimoyas, feijoas, loquats, persimmons, sapotes, guavas, grapes (wine and dessert), currants (black, white and red), raspberries, brambles, strawberries, blueberries, gooseberries, walnuts, chestnuts and any other kind of fruit that the Examining Board may from time to time declare to be fruit for the purposes of this Schedule.

“Identification”, in relation to each of plants, weeds, insects, diseases and other pests which occur in New Zealand, means the assigning thereto of its scientific name and commonly used name.

“Institute” means the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture Incorporated.

“Orchard” means any area of land greater than 4000 square metres on which fruit bearing plants are grown for the purposes of producing fruit for sale, whether the trees have come into bearing or not.

“Pest” means any mammal, bird, arthropod, mollusc, nematode or other worm, fungus, bacterium, virus or mycoplasma injurious to horticultural plants.

“Practical experience” means horticultural employment approved by the Examining Board.

“Weed” means a plant growing where it is not wanted.

Award of Certificate, Diploma and Diploma with Honours

  1. The Institute, on the recommendation of the Examining Board, may issue to a candidate who complies with all the conditions and requirements herein prescribed—

(a) A Certificate to a candidate who has passed all the subjects 1 to 14 listed in 3 (1).

(b) A Diploma to a candidate who has passed all the subjects 1 to 20 listed in 3 (1).

(c) A Diploma with Honours to a candidate who has passed all the subjects 1 to 21 listed in 3 (1).

Subjects of Examination

  1. (1) The subjects for the Certificate, Diploma and Diploma with honours examinations shall be:

(1) Horticultural Botany
(2) Plant Pests and Disorders
(3) Soil Properties and Processes
(4) Horticultural Practices
(5) The Fruit Industry in New Zealand
(6) Weed Control and Horticultural Chemicals
(7) Soil Management
(8) Fruit Production I
(9) Work Record Report
(10) Horticultural Plant Science
(11) Plant Protection (Fruit Production)
(12) Fruit Production II
(13) Machinery and Structures (Fruit Production)
(14) Oral and Practical Examination I (Fruit Production)
(15) Fruit Crop Botany
(16) Fruit Production III
(17) Engineering (Fruit Production)
(18) Management (Fruit Production)
(19) Project
(20) Oral and Practical Examination II (Fruit Production)
(21) Thesis

(2) The oral and practical examinations shall be combined, and shall be designed to test the candidate’s practical ability in horticulture and appreciation and understanding of horticultural operations and activities normally carried on orchards.

(3) Each of the subjects 1 to 8, 10 to 13, 15 to 18 shall be examined by one 3-hour written examination.

(4) Candidates must demonstrate a knowledge of safe practices in all examinations.

Conduct of Examinations

  1. The examinations for the Institute’s Certificate, Diploma and Diploma with Honours shall be held at such times and at such centres as shall be decided by the Examining Board. All examinations other than oral and practical examinations shall be held in November or in any other month specified by the Examining Board.

Examination Fees

  1. Every candidate for any examination for the Institute’s Certificate, Diploma or Diploma with Honours conducted by the Institute shall pay to the Institute such fee as the Board may prescribe in respect of each subject the candidate wishes to be examined in. The fee may not exceed $120 for each subject.

Equivalent Status

  1. For the purpose of the award of a Certificate, Diploma or Diploma with Honours the Examining Board may, at its discretion:

(a) Except with respect to oral and practical examinations, accept a pass in an equivalent or higher examination, or in subjects of such an examination held by some competent public authority as equivalent to a pass in one or more corresponding subjects of the Institute’s examinations. The Examining Board will consider the horticultural content of such examinations when making its decision.

(b) Waive any of the conditions of the examination, accept a pass in an equivalent or higher examination, or in subjects of such an examination held by some competent public authority as equivalent to a pass in one or more corresponding subjects of the Institute’s examinations. (c) Adopt a system of cross-crediting whereby a candidate having obtained a pass in any subjects in the schemes of examinations held under the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture Examinations Approval Notice No. 1954/207, 1957/149, 1961/122, 1968/122 and
