THE WEATHER IN NEW ZEALAND IN JANUARY 1887

General—January was warmer than usual over the whole of New Zealand.

Mean sea level pressures were near normal over the south of the South Island. At 4 p.m. on the 23rd a very low pressure of 967.4 hPa was reached at Timaru Airport.

North-westerly winds were rather persistent this month. At both Auckland and Invercargill Airport their frequency was the second highest since records began 30 years ago.

Rainfall—Rather dry conditions prevailed over the North Island, and eastern regions of the South Island during the first three weeks of January. No rain was recorded at Tauranga Airport until the 19th, and up to the 21st less than 5 mm had been recorded at Kelburn, Nelson, Blenheim, Kaikoura and Christchurch Airport. Rainfall was only 20 to 40 percent of normal in Gisborne, Hawke Bay, and Marlborough and on the Canterbury Plains.

It was very wet in the Waikato, King Country, and in Westland, with totals for the month ranging between 180 to 270 percent of normal. Over 800 mm was recorded for the month at Franz Josef.

Temperatures—Mean temperatures were 1.5 to 2.5°C above normal in east coast regions (south of Hawke Bay), including Wellington. Elsewhere they were 1°C above normal. In much of South Canterbury this was the warmest January for at least 20 years. At Waihi a maximum temperature of 32.1°C was reached on the 13th. This was the highest there since records began in 1928.

Sunshine—January was a sunny month, with hours of bright sunshine ranging from 110 to 120 percent of normal in most places. At Christchurch Airport the total of 280 hours (134 percent of normal) was the highest since 288 hours was reached in 1957.

It was a little cloudier than usual in Northland and in Southland.
