TO ALL SUBSCRIBERS AND USERS
MESSAGE FROM THE PUBLISHER
For some 147 years the New Zealand Gazette has provided an effective and efficient medium for the promulgation of important constitutional announcements, administrative decisions of the Executive and a wide range of information relating to activities and departments of Government. As a result of an extensive review of New Zealand’s oldest newspaper, the New Zealand Gazette is undergoing major changes.
The planned changes are significant and are aimed at improving the appearance, content and service provided by the New Zealand Gazette. The improved layout and arrangement of material will make it easier for the reader to find information. The new cumulative quarterly index will mean information retrieval can be carried out more quickly and easily. New areas of information are also planned which will enhance the New Zealand Gazette’s role as an authoritative journal of constitutional record.
The single most important change will be the introduction of the new Commercial Edition. This will see notices and information currently contained under ‘Advertisements’ in the present Gazette being published in a new and separate format and should prove ideal to those companies and individuals requiring this information. These changes will be introduced from the beginning of November.
In keeping with Government’s financial strategy, the New Zealand Gazette will be operating on a full cost recovery basis. It has already been operating on a partial cost recovery basis for a number of years and the extension of this will mean that the Department of Internal Affairs as publisher, will no longer be responsible for funding the Gazette. That responsibility will now be shared out amongst all contributors, users and subscribers. The current ‘free list’ to libraries and other organisations is to be abolished. New and attractive subscription packages are to be introduced to coincide with the renewal of existing subscriptions at the beginning of 1988. Full details of the new charges will be announced shortly.
Over the next few weeks, a representative from the Gazette Office will contact all major contributors of material to the Gazette, to discuss their requirements and the service that can be provided. If you need additional information to what is outlined in the attached section, please contact Mr Darryl Stevens, New Zealand Gazette Project Coordinator or the Gazette Office staff on Wellington (04) 738-699 extension 8608. They will be happy to assist.
I trust that all contributors, subscribers and users will continue to support the New Zealand Gazette.
P. W. BOAG, Secretary for Internal Affairs.
Publisher of the New Zealand Gazette.
