Death of Speaker of the House of Representatives and Member of the House of Representatives for Timaru Electoral District
Pursuant to the Electoral Act 1956, His Excellency the Governor-General directs it to be notified that the Honourable Sir Basil Malcolm Arthur, Bt., Speaker of the House of Representatives and Member of the House of Representatives for Timaru Electoral District, died on the 1st day of May 1985; and that the seat in the House of Representatives for the said Electoral District is vacant by reason of such death.

Pursuant to section 35 of the Defence Act 1971, His Excellency the Governor-General has approved the following appointments, promotions, extensions, transfers, resignations, and retirements of officers of the New Zealand Army.

Brigadier G. A. Hitchings, M.B.E., is re-engaged until 23 January 1987.
ROYAL REGIMENT OF N.Z. ARTILLERY
Colonel Commandant
Colonel D. R. Kenning, M.B.E., Retired List, is appointed Colonel Commandant, Royal Regiment of N.Z. Artillery, for a period of 4 years with effect from 1 April 1985, vice Brigadier E. J. Valentine, O.B.E., E.D., Army Reserve, General List of Officers.
Captain Alan William Goodwin is transferred from the Special Service List, Territorial Force, in his present rank with seniority from 1 September 1983, effect from 22 February 1985 and is engaged until retiring age for rank.
ROYAL N.Z. ARMOURED CORPS
Captain Peter John Speedy is posted to the Retired List with effect from 2 March 1985.
THE CORPS OF ROYAL N.Z. ENGINEERS
Captain (acting Major) S. G. Ransley relinquishes the acting rank of Major with effect from 2 March 1985.
ROYAL N.Z. CORPS OF SIGNALS
Captain J. L. Castell, B.A., to be temp. Major with effect from 20 December 1984.
ROYAL N.Z. INFANTRY REGIMENT
Captain (temp. Major) A. R. F. MacKenzie to be Major with seniority and effect from 16 February 1985.
Captain Anthony Francis Williams is transferred to the Army Reserve, General List of Officers, in his present rank with effect from 27 February 1985.
Captain Nicholas John Batchelor is transferred to the Army Reserve, General List of Officers, in his present rank with effect from 4 March 1985.
Captain Edward John Te Waiwai Marshall is transferred to the Army Reserve, General List of Officers, in his present rank with effect from 23 February 1985.
The seniority of Captain B. A. Smith is antedated to 10 June 1983.
The following Lieutenants to be temp. Captain with effect from the date shown:
