EXPLANATORY NOTE
This note is not part of the bylaws, but is intended to indicate their general effect.
These bylaws, which come into force on 1 March 1982, regulate the conduct of persons within the Poor Knights Islands Marine Reserve, and the conduct of scientific study in the reserve.
Any person who wishes to undertake scientific study in the reserve must make a written application to the Secretary at least 1 month before the intended date of commencement of the study, and obtain the approval of the Committee to the conduct of the study.
Except for areas of the reserve that are closed for scientific study, the public has unrestricted access to and the right to dive in the reserve.
Vessels may be anchored in the reserve so long as damage is kept to the minimum practicable level, but no vessel may be anchored within a closed area or within 100 metres of a buoy marking a closed area.
There is a speed restriction of 5 knots imposed on all vessels operating within 200 metres of the shore, and a requirement that a watch be kept from all vessels for divers using the reserve.
Areas closed for scientific study must be clearly marked by yellow buoys.
