Decision of the Film Censorship Board of Review

PURSUANT to section 82 of the Cinematograph Films Act 1976, Amalgamated Theatres Ltd. applied for a review of the film Paradise. The review was held in Wellington on 13 August 1982.

Paradise is a RSL Films production. It is purportedly set in Arabia in the early 19th century. Its theme develops around two teenagers, David and Sarah. The couple survive an attack by tribesmen on their caravan. They find bliss in various lushly appointed oases in the desert. Sporadic attacks by tribesmen relieve the tedium of David and Sarah's existence. The couple gradually grow to know each other and become sexually aware.

The Board was unanimous in its decision that the film would not be injurious to the public good with an R13 classification. Nudity is featured in the film but not in an offensive or unnecessary manner. The sex scenes of the film were not explicit and were somewhat stylised.

In terms of section 28 of the Cinematograph Films Act 1976, Paradise was approved for exhibition with the classification R13.

J. M. PRIESTLEY, Chairman.
