A cemetery is generally thought of as a peaceful last resting place. The Bolton Street Cemetery, lying only a short distance from Wellington’s busy Lambton Quay, has had a restless history. From the fierce “consecration” debate of the 1840s to the contentious motorway of the 1960s, the cemetery’s land, siting and maintenance have been constantly under critical fire.

In this study of Whare Kohanga (the “Nest House”) is contained data of baptism rites performed over infants of superior families only, together with other cultural ceremonies applied to infants of high birth. The information obtained was contributed by members of the Ngati-Kahungunu tribe of the North Island. The text has been retained in its original style in the belief that these basic studies should still be readily available without textual alteration.

ABBOTSFORD LANDSLIP DISASTER

On 8 August 1979 the Abbotsford landslip disaster occurred involving the movement of 18 hectares of land and 69 houses. As the immediate shock receded many complaints arising from the disaster were made. The outcome was the appointment of a commission to inquire into the situation and to report on the various matters comprised in the term of reference.
