A cemetery is generally thought of as a peaceful last resting place. The Bolton Street Cemetery, lying only a short distance from Wellington’s busy Lambton Quay, has had a restless history. From the fierce “consecration” debate of the 1840s to the contentious motorway of the 1960s, the cemetery’s land, siting and maintenance have been constantly under critical fire.

On 8 August 1979 the Abbotsford landslip disaster occurred involving the movement of 18 hectares of land and 69 houses. As the immediate shock receded many complaints arising from the disaster were made.
