THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE
1139
It was submitted by the Comptroller that a restriction order should be applied to this publication and a similar suggestion was made by the importer. According to the importer the publication has been distributed throughout New Zealand since 1977.
This is the first American edition of a book which was published in Germany in 1974 under the title Lustgewinn in der Ehe. It is more than a sex manual, having been designed, according to the preface, to help readers to “get acquainted with the most effective ways of showing tenderness as well as passion”. One of the authors is director of the EURASE Institute for Marriage Counselling; he writes in the preface “I have no doubt (the book) will save many a marriage—possibly even your own”.
The illustrated discussion which follows examines in a low-toned manner that is both sympathetic and rational the extent to which sexual harmony can overcome other apparently unrelated problems in marriage. The idea that pleasure-related sexual practices have been developed to express “the vital, lasting male-female relationship” leads logically to detailed instruction in techniques (though the authors apologise for the use of this mechanical term).
The whole purpose of the book, both text and photographs (which are of the same couple throughout), is to help people learn “the art of using their bodies as instruments of love.” The Tribunal sees both the intention and execution of Sexual Adventure in Marriage as honest, tasteful, and constructive; it is however a book for the more mature reader and is accordingly classified as indecent in the hands of persons under the age of 16.
Dated at Wellington this 13th day of April 1981.
