Decision of the Films Censorship Board of Review
PURSUANT to section 82 of the Cinematograph Films Act 1976, Twentieth Century Fox Ltd. applied for a review of the feature film Endless Love. The review was held in Wellington on 13 November.
Endless Love, as the title suggests, is concerned with the universal theme of adolescent love which knows no bounds in the eyes of the lovers, but about which parents are more sceptical. Despite the liberal approach of Jade’s parents in the bringing up of their children, Jade’s father resents the intrusion into family life represented by her boyfriend, David. He considers the affair to be getting out of hand when it becomes apparent that the young couple are sleeping together in his home, and imposes a 30-day separation.
This separation precipitates a crisis that not only separates the young lovers, but also both sets of parents. A fire is lit by David in front of Jade’s house in a desperate bid to gain attention, but this, symbolically enough, gets out of control, and destroys the house. After two years in a mental institution David sets out to seek Jade, and in the process is the innocent cause of the death of Jade’s father. Amidst the confusion and trauma the film salvages the hope of a happy ending for the young lovers.
None of the Board members considered the film to be offensive or objectionable, but were concerned with establishing the age at which sexually explicit scenes could become injurious to the public good for a young audience. Most members felt that an R13 classification without excisions would be too low and favoured the higher classification of R14 if no excisions were to be made. One member was of the opinion that because sexual development in individual children varies so greatly, a determination between R13 and R14 would be a most arbitrary decision for the Board to make. After further consideration the Board determined that one scene of sexual intercourse in Jade’s bedroom was sufficiently sexually explicit to be considered injurious to the public good of a young audience and should be excised if the film were to receive an R13 classification.
The distributor agreed to the suggested excision in terms of section 29 (3) of the Act, and the Board agreed unanimously that the film should be classified R13 with one excision.
J. M. PRIESTLEY, Chairman.
