Decision
"Shunga" is the generic name given to the erotic paintings, prints, and illustrated books of Japan. Translated literally, it means "spring drawings". The introduction to this collection of reproductions points out that "to understand the shunga, we must first acknowledge the structure and ethics of the society which produced them", and to this end there is included a prose text which is in effect a series of essays which supply an authoritative, historical, and cultural context for the drawings.
The prints shown are without question examples taken from a serious and sophisticated artistic tradition. Those who study this comprehensive collection may be entertained and educated; it is not the opinion of the Tribunal that they will be corrupted. The Tribunal therefore classifies this book as not indecent.
LAURENCE M. GREIG, Chairman.
Decision No. 946
Reference No. 45/79
In the matter of the Indecent Publications Act 1963, and in the matter of an application by the Comptroller of Customs in respect of the publication: Sexology Volume 45, Numbers Eight, Nine and Ten, published by Media Publications Ltd., England.
