land. Lighter falls were recorded throughout most of the South Island, and moderate rain in Poverty Bay, Hawke’s Bay and northern Wairarapa. Early on the 9th an anticyclone moved onto New Zealand from the Tasman Sea, and this brought fine weather to most districts until the 13th. Temperatures were cool on the 9th and 10th, but appreciably above normal on the 12th and 13th, especially along the east coast of the country. During the morning of the 13th a trough of low pressure was lying across the South Island and moving north-east across New Zealand. On the 14th a small depression developed within the trough and began to move south-east toward central districts of the country. Heavy rain was reported in Westland, Marlborough, Wellington, and Wairarapa, and parts of Manawatu and Bay of Plenty as the depression moved to the east of the country. Some of these areas had 24 hour falls of more than 50 mm, with light to moderate falls elsewhere. A ridge of high pressure extended from an anticyclone in the Tasman Sea which moved onto the country on the 16th. Most areas had fine weather until early on the 17th, although temperatures were cooler than usual in districts east of the main ranges.

A depression which had formed near Tasmania was lying to the west of Fiordland on the 17th, and an associated cold front moved northwards across the country. By the afternoon of the 17th the depression had begun to move slowly north-east and was almost stationary off the West Coast on the 18th. During the 20th the depression moved across the South Island bringing heavy rain to Westland, Buller, Nelson, and Marlborough. The cold front also brought heavy rain to Northland, Auckland, Waikato, and Bay of Plenty, some areas reporting 24 hour falls of more than 50 mm. At Christchurch Airport a fall of more than 40 mm was recorded in the 24 hours up to 9 a.m. on the 21st.

On the 21st a trough of low pressure moved onto Fiordland and was proceeding northwards across the country. 24 hour falls of 60 mm were recorded in Fiordland and Westland with light to moderate rain in most districts of both Islands west of the main ranges. From the 23rd to the 26th an anticyclone was almost stationary over New Zealand, and during this period only light showers were reported in some districts. A depression which had developed off the Australian coast moved southeast towards the country, and by the morning of the 26th another depression had formed on a cold front in the Tasman Sea.

The situation had become complex by the 27th, with multiple low pressure areas and associated cold fronts moving onto New Zealand from the Tasman Sea. As these systems crossed the country heavy rain was recorded in Westland and Fiordland, with 24 hour falls of between 50 mm and 70 mm, and lighter falls throughout the rest of New Zealand. The only areas that did not report rain were districts east of the main ranges. On the 30th a further trough of low pressure had moved onto the South Island and this brought rain to most of the country as it moved northwards apart from parts of Poverty Bay and Hawke’s Bay. Temperatures were above normal throughout New Zealand during the last week of the month. On the east coast maximum temperatures were at least 5°C higher than usual.
