No. 10

Temperatures—The only areas with mean temperatures ½°C to 1¼°C below normal were parts of Canterbury, inland Otago, and Fiordland. Throughout the rest of New Zealand they were above average by almost 1°C, and in coastal Canterbury by more than 1°C. There was a very cold spell at the end of the month from the 28th to 30th with maximum temperatures about 5°C below average in many areas. From the 24th to 26th daytime temperatures were above normal by more than 5°C in districts on the east coast of both Islands.

Sunshine—The total sunshine hours for the month were above normal over most of the country apart from Wellington which had 30 hours less than usual, and Nelson, 15 hours. At Christchurch Airport 263 sunshine hours were recorded, the highest at this station for December since 1962. Some stations in Northland and Auckland had in excess of 50 hours more sunshine than usual.

WEATHER SEQUENCE DECEMBER 1979

Pressures were high to the north of New Zealand, with a cold front moving northwards across the country at the beginning of December. Early on the 2nd an active cold front associated with a depression moving to the south of the country moved onto the South Island. As this front crossed New Zealand heavy rain was recorded in Manawatu, Marlborough, Westland, Fiordland, Otago, and parts of Canterbury and Southland. Moderate rain was reported in other parts of the country. At Mount Cook the 24 hour fall up to 9 a.m. on the 3rd was more than 500 mm, and many stations reported falls of between 50 and 150 mm in this period. Late on the 3rd the front had moved away from the country and an anticyclone moved onto New Zealand from the Tasman Sea. Fine weather prevailed throughout most of the country on the 4th and 5th, with near normal temperatures.

On the 6th a trough of low pressure had moved onto the South Island, and this brought heavy rain to parts of Westland, Marlborough, Taranaki, Bay of Plenty, Auckland and Northland. Heavy rain also fell in Wellington and southern Wairarapa on the 7th when a disturbance in a southerly airstream crossed the area. By the morning of the 8th a ridge of high pressure extended onto the South Island, but a wave depression formed in the trough of low pressure which had moved to the east of the country. Most districts had fine weather apart from Poverty Bay, Hawke’s Bay and Wairarapa, where moderate to heavy rain was reported as the depression became stationary off the east coast. Temperatures were much colder than usual in areas east of the South Island, and later in the day a depression formed on this front in the Tasman Sea, and began to move southward toward New Zealand. This depression deepened and became slow moving crossing the country from the 11th to the 13th. Heavy rain was reported in Westland and Fiordland, with light to moderate falls throughout the whole of New Zealand as the depression moved eastwards. A further trough of low pressure moved from the Tasman Sea onto the South Island on the 14th, but only light rain fell in most districts. An anticyclone became established over the country on the 15th and this persisted until the 17th, bringing fine weather to New Zealand. Temperatures were warm along the east coast on the 16th and 17th.

During the afternoon of the 17th a complex trough of low pressure had moved east from Tasmania and was approaching the South Island. This brought 24-hour falls of more than 100 mm to parts of Westland and Fiordland, and lighter rain to areas west of the main ranges. On the 19th a cold front associated with a depression to the south of the country also brought heavy rain to the West Coast as it moved northeast. An anticyclone passed quickly over New Zealand on the 21st, and light showers were reported only in Westland.

Early on the 22nd a cold front had moved onto Fiordland, and this was followed on the 24th by a trough of low pressure. Some stations on the West Coast reported 24-hour falls of more than 50 mm each day during this period. Heavy rain was also reported in parts of inland Canterbury and Otago on the 24th. As the trough of low pressure moved northwards across the country, moderate to heavy rain fell in most districts on the 25th and 26th. In some central districts of the North Island there were 24-hour falls in excess of 50 mm up to 9 a.m. on the 26th. The only areas with light rain or showers were Poverty Bay, Hawke’s Bay and coastal Canterbury.

A depression which formed within the trough on the 27th moved slowly across Marlborough and northern Canterbury, bringing heavy rain to these districts. On the 28th a ridge of high pressure extended onto the South Island and a cold southerly airflow covered New Zealand. Temperatures were very cold on the 28th and 29th. During the afternoon of the 29th a front associated with a depression to the east of New Zealand began to move south across the North Island. A depression to the north of the country had started to move slowly onto Northland early on the 30th. As these two systems passed over the North Island heavy rain was reported in Northland, Bay of Plenty, and central districts of the North Island, and moderate falls in areas north of Cook Strait.
