of more than 100 mm, and Wellington, Manawatu, Taranaki, and
Central Districts with falls of more than 50 mm in the same period.
Temperatures were very warm on the east coast of the North
Island but cooler than normal in parts of the South Island.
On the 9th a cold front associated with the depression in the
Tasman Sea had moved onto the country. Heavy rain was re-
corded in Taranaki, and moderate falls in most districts of the
North Island and the northern half of the South Island. Early on
the 10th the depression had moved onto New Zealand, and many
areas west of the main ranges recorded heavy rain. Most of the
country had light to moderate falls apart from parts of Hawke’s
Bay and Wairarapa. On the 11th a further depression had de-
veloped off the Australian coast and was moving east towards New
Zealand. During the morning of the 13th the cold front ahead of
this depression had moved onto the North Island. As the depres-
sion crossed the country it was followed by a series of low pressure
troughs until the morning of the 17th, when a ridge of high
pressure extended onto the South Island from the Tasman Sea.
Most of the country experienced fine weather but cooler tempera-
tures from the 17th to 19th. Some areas on the east coast of the
North Island and Southland had some isolated showers. A weak
cold front moved northwards over the country on the 20th, and
light to moderate rain was reported in areas mainly east of the
main ranges, other districts had only isolated showers.
A depression which had formed in the north Tasman Sea on
the 21st moved slowly towards the North Island, and by the
morning of the 23rd was lying to the north-west of Northland.
The ridge of high pressure persisted until the 24th and then
began to weaken. The depression to the north-west moved slowly
east, and only light rain was reported in Northland. A cold front
moved onto Fiordland during the afternoon of the 25th, but only
light to moderate rain was recorded in areas west of the main
ranges as it crossed the country. Over most of New Zealand
temperatures were considerably cooler than normal until the 25th.
Most of the country had fine weather on the 26th and 27th,
but on the 28th a cold front associated with a depression moving
to the south of the South Island brought heavy rain to Fiordland,
Westland, Buller, Marlborough, Taranaki, and Central Districts.
Twenty-four hour falls of more than 70 mm were recorded in
Westland.
From the 30th to the end of the month an anticyclone moved
across the country, and only isolated showers were reported in
most districts. By the afternoon of the 31st a depression in the
north Tasman Sea had begun to move towards New Zealand.
Temperatures were cooler than normal in most districts at the
end of the month.
