on the West Coast, and light to moderate falls elsewhere west of
the main ranges in the South Island. Until the morning of the 19th
the anticyclone covered the whole of New Zealand and fine weather
prevailed throughout the country. A cold front associated with a
depression to the northwest of the North Island moved onto North-
land early on the 19th. The depression had moved onto the country
by the morning of the 20th, and rainfalls of more than 70 mm were
recorded in 24 hours in Northland. Light to moderate falls were
reported in most areas in the northern half of the North Island as
the depression moved eastwards. A trough of low pressure brought
heavy rain to Fiordland, and lighter falls to the whole country as it
moved northwards across New Zealand on the 21st and 22nd.

An anticyclone moved across New Zealand from the west on the
23rd/26th, only light rain falling east of the main ranges in the
North Island in this period. On the morning of the 28th a trough of
low pressure had started to move northwards across New Zealand,

and 24-hour falls of more than 80 mm were recorded at some
stations on the West Coast. A wave depression formed on the cold
front in the trough, and this produced very heavy rain in Westland
on the 29th and 30th. Between 100 and 150 mm were recorded in
some areas in 24 hours. Heavy rain also fell in northern parts of
Canterbury, Marlborough, Taranaki, and Bay of Plenty as the
system crossed New Zealand. Most areas had light to moderate
rain. Later on the 31st an anticyclone in the Tasman Sea extended
a ridge of high pressure towards the country. Temperatures were
warmer than usual in most districts at the end of the month,
appreciably higher than normal along the east coasts of both
islands.
