The “normal” refers to the present site of the instruments. Standard period for normals is 1941–1970. No normals are available for stations with only short records.

*Indicates that the sunshine recorder is not located at the station but is in the near vicinity.

A rain day is a day with rainfall equal to or greater than 0.1 mm.

Where the extremes of temperature and rainfall have occurred more than once during the month, the date of the first occurrence is given.

WEATHER NOTES FOR SEPTEMBER 1979

General—In September pressures were below normal over the whole of New Zealand for the second month in succession. There was a greater frequency of westerly winds throughout the country, and in central districts a high frequency of gusts was recorded. At Kelburn, Wellington, there were 12 days in the month with gusts of at least 96 km/h (52 knots), and this is the greatest number recorded in any September since records began at this station in 1953. Cloudy conditions prevailed in most districts with above normal temperatures.

Ground conditions were still wet and muddy until late in the month, and cooler temperatures during the last week prevented good grass growth in most areas. Although lambing progressed fairly well, lack of sunshine and cooler wet conditions did cause some lamb losses in Wairarapa and Hawke’s Bay. Stock on the whole was reported to be in good condition, but waterlogged ground in some districts has had its effect on cattle and dairy cows.

Rainfall—The only areas with below normal rainfall for the month were Nelson, Marlborough, and Canterbury, and parts of Northland, Waikato, Taranaki, and Manawatu. In Hawke’s Bay and Wairarapa some places were above average by more than 100
