Weather Notes for September 1978—continued

of between 30 and 50 mm occurred in Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Taranaki, Wellington, Canterbury and the West Coast. On the 17th/19th a small depression with associated cold front moved eastwards from the Tasman Sea and crossed the North Island. Heavy rain was recorded in Northland and Auckland with moderate falls in many areas in the northern half of the North Island. Isolated showers were also reported along the east coast of the South Island. Temperatures were cold in Canterbury, Otago and Southland on the 19th.

A depression developed in the north Tasman Sea on the 19th and began to move slowly southeast towards New Zealand. A ridge of high pressure covered most of the country until the 22nd when it moved eastwards. The depression moved to the north of the North Island, and a trough of low pressure moved onto the South Island early on the 23rd. Rain was recorded in most areas of the West Coast. Another depression had formed off the Australian coast on the 23rd, and by the 24th had moved rapidly towards New Zealand and was lying to the west of the North Island. A warm front associated with this depression brought heavy rain to the West Coast, some areas recording more than 150 mm in the 24 hours up to 9 a.m. on the 24th. As the depression crossed the North Island parts of Northland, Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Taranaki and Wellington had falls in excess of 30 mm in 24 hours.

On the 26th a weak ridge of high pressure covered most of the country and a depression developed to the south of Australia and started to move east. By the 28th this depression was lying to the west of the South Island and the ridge had moved away from New Zealand. The cold front ahead of this depression moved northwards over the country, bringing rain to most areas west of the main ranges. Temperatures were considerably colder than normal on the east coast of both Islands from the 25th to the 27th.

On the 29th and 30th a ridge of high pressure covered the country, but isolated showers were reported in many areas.
