Nelson, parts of Marlborough, and Westland during the passage of this trough. More than 80 mm was reported in Taranaki and parts of Buller and Nelson in 24 hours. Most of the country, apart from the east coast, had moderate falls. Temperatures were above, or near to normal over the whole country.

A westerly airstream covered the country from the 12th to the 14th and disturbances in this flow brought isolated showers to many districts. Pressures remained low to the east of New Zealand and to the south of the country. An anticyclone on the Australian continent extended a ridge of high pressure onto New Zealand from the 14th, and by the 16th the anticyclone had become centred over the country, and this persisted until the 18th. A depression that had formed near New Caledonia on the 17th was moving southwards towards the North Island, and by the 18th was lying just to the north of Northland. As this depression and associated cold front moved south over the North Island, most areas from Northland to Manawatu experienced gale force winds and moderate to heavy rain. Damage was caused by high winds and flooding in many areas, and coastal erosion by unusually heavy seas. Some parts of Northland recorded more than 100 mm of rain in 24 hours, and in Bay of Plenty, Poverty Bay, and Hawke’s Bay in excess of this was reported over a period of 2 days. Temperatures were slightly cooler than normal throughout New Zealand, especially on the east coast of the North Island.

By the 22nd the depression had filled and was lying to the south of the South Island. Pressures were high to the north of New Zealand, and a strong westerly airflow covered the North Island,

and later on the 22nd, the whole country. Disturbances in this flow brought showers to most areas west of the main ranges. Late on the 23rd a depression which had formed in the Tasman Sea began to move rapidly towards New Zealand, and early on the 24th the cold front associated with the depression had moved onto the South Island. Heavy rain was reported in parts of Fiordland, Westland, Buller, and central districts of the North Island as this front crossed the country. Some parts of Westland had more than 100 mm of rain in 48 hours.

The depression had moved to the east of the South Island by the 25th, and a further depression was approaching Northland early on the 26th. As the latter depression crossed the country heavy rain fell in Northland, Auckland, and parts of Bay of Plenty and Poverty Bay. Most areas in the northern half of the North Island recorded moderate falls. Pressures were high in the Tasman Sea for a short period on the 27th until a low pressure trough formed near Tasmania and began to move eastwards. A series of low pressure centres developed within this trough and as they crossed New Zealand on the 28th and 29th many areas in both Islands recorded light to moderate rain, the heaviest falls occurring in Manawatu and Taranaki, also parts of Fiordland.

A ridge of high pressure extended onto New Zealand from an anticyclone centred over Australia which persisted until the end of the month. Most of the country had fine weather, but slightly cooler temperatures.
