✨ Climatological Summary and Contracts
2008 THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE No. 62
An anticyclone was centred in the south Tasman Sea with a ridge of high pressure extending onto most of New Zealand on the 20th. A low pressure area had begun to develop off the east coast of Australia, and the depression to the east of the country had started to move slowly south-east. The ridge persisted until the 22nd when a cold front associated with a depression in the north Tasman Sea moved onto Northland. Some rain was reported on the east coast of the North Island as far south as Wairarapa. The depression centred to the west of Northland began to move onto New Zealand early on the 24th and some areas of Northland recorded falls of more than 50 mm in 24 hours. As the depression moved eastwards away from the country on the 26th an anticyclone became established covering the area from the Australian coast, across New Zealand, to the Chatham Islands. Most areas of New Zealand experienced at least 2 days of fine weather while the anticyclone persisted. Temperatures were slightly colder than usual in most districts.
Pressures became low to the south of the country and by the 27th a strong westerly airstream covered Fiordland and Southland. Disturbances in this westerly flow brought heavy rain to most of Fiordland. Milford Sound recorded more than 100 mm in the 24 hours up to 9 a.m. on the 28th. The anticyclone persisted over most of New Zealand until the morning of the 31st when it began to weaken and move eastwards. A cold front associated with a depression to the south of the country moved onto the South Island early on the 31st. As this front moved slowly northwards heavy rain was recorded in Fiordland, Westland, and parts of Southland. The heaviest falls recorded were in Milford Sound with more than 400 mm being recorded in 24 hours. Temperatures were above normal in Otago, Canterbury, and Wairarapa towards the end of the month.
