✨ Weather Report and Bankruptcy Notices
13 APRIL
THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE
1103
The weather continued fine over the whole country, apart from a few isolated showers, until the morning of the 9th, when a cold front associated with a depression to the south of New Zealand moved onto the South Island. Showers were recorded in the lower half of the North Island and many parts of the South Island, as this front crossed the country, the heaviest falls being in Fiordland. A strong westerly flow became established over the South Island early on the 10th, and disturbances in this flow brought heavy rain to the West Coast, and isolated showers to other parts of New Zealand. Temperatures were very warm in most areas east of the main ranges, especially in Canterbury and Otago.
An anticyclone had become established over the whole country late on the 13th and this brought fine weather to most of the country until early on the 15th. A trough of low pressure moved onto the South Island, and the anticyclone moved east away from the country. As this trough of low pressure moved northwards heavy rain was reported in Buller and Nelson, and later in many areas in the North Island. Serious flooding occurred in the Auckland area on the 16th/17th. On the 18th a ridge of high pressure extended from the Tasman Sea onto the North Island, with pressures low to the south of the country. Small disturbances in a westerly flow over New Zealand brought isolated showers to many areas on the West Coast and Southland, but most of the country had dry fine weather.
On the 20th a depression to the south of Tasmania was moving south-east, and the cold front associated with this depression moved onto the South Island on the 21st, and became almost stationary over Fiordland and Southland. Twenty-four hour rainfalls of more than 100 mm were recorded in parts of Fiordland. Most of Southland, Otago, Westland, and South Canterbury had substantial falls on the 22nd and 23rd. From the 23rd to the 24th small disturbances in a westerly flow over New Zealand brought isolated showers to many areas. On the 24th an anticyclone had moved onto the country bringing fine dry weather to most areas.
A cold front associated with a depression to the east of New Zealand brought rain to some areas east of the main ranges in the North Island on the 26th. The heaviest falls were recorded in Hawke's Bay and Bay of Plenty with isolated showers in Poverty Bay. The anticyclone over the country began to move slowly east on the 27th, but a ridge of high pressure extended from the anticyclone over New Zealand until the end of the month. A depression which had formed near Tasmania, and associated cold front, had moved eastwards and by the 28th was lying in the central Tasman Sea.
