WEATHER SEQUENCE

The depression and cold front that had crossed New Zealand at the end of December continued to move south-east away from the country. An anticyclone moved onto New Zealand early on the 2nd and became almost stationary until the 4th. There were a few isolated showers reported in both islands during this period, with warm temperatures in Otago and Southland. A cold front moved onto the South Island and a few isolated areas of the North Island.

On the 5th a ridge of high pressure extended onto the country from the Tasman Sea, with low pressures to the south and north. A tropical cyclone, "Bob", was moving south-west from near Fiji towards New Zealand on the 6th, and by the 8th had begun to move south-east towards New Zealand. The anticyclone over the country had started to move east early on the 7th, and a cold front associated with a depression to the south of the country moved onto the South Island. Heavy rain was recorded in Fiordland and Westland, and lighter falls on most of Southland and Otago during the passage of this front. Temperatures were warm on the east coast of the South Island.

A warm front associated with the tropical cyclone to the north-west of Northland moved onto the country on the 8th, and heavy rain was reported at Kaitaia, more than 65 mm in 24 hours, and a similar fall on the Coromandel Peninsula. By the afternoon of the 9th this depression had moved onto the North Island and had begun to weaken. Pressures were high over central New Zealand and the South Island. As the depression moved east pressures became low over the country, and by the 11th a trough of low pressure had moved onto Southland. As this trough crossed New Zealand rain was reported in most areas of the country, apart from Canterbury and parts of Otago.

From the 13th to the 15th pressures were high to the north, an low to the south of the country with a strong westerly airflow over New Zealand. Small disturbances in this airflow brought rain, heavy at times, to the West Coast. An anticyclone had become established over the North Island early on the 16th but by the 17th had moved east. A cold front associated with a depression moving south-east in the south Tasman Sea moved onto the South Island on the 17th and this brought heavy rain to the West Coast, 24 hour falls of more than 100 mm being recorded in Westland up to 9 a.m. on both the 18th and 19th. Temperatures were very warm on the east coast of both the North and South Islands from the 15th to the 18th, especially in Poverty Bay, Hawke's Bay and Wairarapa.

On the 19th a small depression formed on an almost stationary front lying across the South Island. This depression crossed the country on the 20th bringing showery conditions to many parts of central New Zealand. A ridge of high pressure extended onto the country on the 21st, and an anticyclone persisted until early on the 29th bringing fine weather to most of New Zealand, with only a few isolated showers being reported in both islands. Temperatures were very warm in Wairarapa and Wellington from the 25th to the 28th, and in Canterbury, Otago and Southland from the 26th to the 28th.

As the anticyclone moved east on the 29th a cold front crossed onto the South Island from the south Tasman Sea. Showers were reported in the lower half of the South Island, heavy in Fiordland, and some isolated showers in the North Island. Early on the 30th an anticyclone had moved onto the country, and this brought fine weather to most of the country until the end of the month.
