Industries Development Commission Notice No. 1977/3

Inquiry Concerning Protection for Certain Paper and Paperboard of Tariff Heading 48.01

PUBLIC HEARING

  1. In a letter of 3 March 1977 the Minister of Customs advised the Commission that, while the Government had not accepted the “support duties” recommended by the Tariff and Development Board in Report No. 358, it agreed with the basic objectives those duties had been intended to realise. He requested the Commission to re-examine the question of an alternative tariff mechanism which might achieve basically the same protective results without affecting New Zealand’s trade policy stance to the same degree. The relevant Tariff items and provisions are set out in the Schedule to this notice.

  2. For purposes of taking evidence the Commission will hold a public hearing in the Hearing Room, Eighth Floor, Cumberland House, Upper Willis Street, Wellington, commencing at 10.30 a.m. on Tuesday, 22 November 1977.

  3. As the Commission considers this inquiry to be an extension of the previous Tariff and Development Board inquiry, it is inviting:

New Zealand Forest Products Ltd.
Printing Industries Federation of New Zealand (Inc.)
New Zealand Paper Merchants’ Association
New Zealand Institute of Packaging

to participate in the inquiry. Any other interested party wishing to participate in the inquiry should notify the Secretary to the Commission immediately.

  1. Parties tendering evidence should lodge, in typewritten form, 14 copies of public evidence and 12 copies of confidential evidence to be presented under oath at the public hearing at the Commission’s office no later than Friday, 14 October 1977.
