south of Australia, and by the morning of the 23rd a depression
had formed south of Tasmania and was moving slowly southeast.
On the 24th a wave depression formed on a cold front in the Tas-
man Sea, and also started to move south-east towards the North
Island. By the 25th the depression in the south Tasman Sea became
complex, and the small wave depression crossed the North Island.
Disturbances in the westerly flow in the north Tasman brought
isolated showers to both Islands. On the 26th, 27th, and 28th
pressures were low in the Tasman Sea and high to the north of New
Zealand. A succession of disturbances in the flow across the north
Tasman brought unsettled weather for three days, with heavy rain
in Taranaki and the central North Island and lighter falls east of the
ranges in the South Island.
On the 29th the main low pressure centre moved east towards
New Zealand with an anticyclone over Australia extending a ridge
of high pressure across Tasmania and south of the country. The
depression passed over the country on the 30th and 31st. Rain was
reported in the North Island and east of the ranges in the South
Island on the 30th, and on the 31st the only areas without rain were
Southland and Otago. Heavy falls were recorded in the Wairarapa
on the 31st. As the depression moved away the ridge of high
pressure in the Tasman Sea moved slowly east but weakened.
Another depression was moving south of Tasmania into the south
Tasman Sea.
