The Church Missionary Society's station at Waimate played an important part in the development of New Zealand. Many hundreds of Maoris were educated at the station which grew into a village. The Vicarage and the Church of St. John have been preserved and this is an account of the past history of the station.

THE WHARE KOHANGA AND ITS LORE

In this study of Whare Kohanga (the “Nest House”) is contained data of baptism rites performed over infants of superior families only, together with other cultural ceremonies applied to infants of high birth. The information obtained was contributed by members of the Ngati-Kahungunu tribe of the North Island. The text has been retained in its original style in the belief that these basic studies should still be readily available without textual alteration.
