SUGGESTIONS FOR TEACHING READING IN INFANT
CLASSES

128 p. Reprinted 1975. 75c
Teachers have long been asking for first reading books that
are closely associated with New Zealand children’s own ex-
periences. The “Ready to Read” books were written to satisfy
this need and when the stories were written teachers in more
than 30 schools tried out the texts and made detailed reports
on them. The book in its final form owes something to these
reports. The “Suggestions for Teaching” book is the teachers’
handbook that introduces the Ready to Read Series. With its
straightforward, uncomplicated approach this handbook may
give teachers renewed pleasure in their work. (Department of
Education.)

TALKBACK

New Zealanders made in discussion groups, meetings, and
seminars held during the public discussion phase of the Educa-

an impression of the major outcomes of the discussion, not
only indicating where a measure of consensus emerged, but
also pointing out where people disagreed. (Educational
Development Conference.)
