LUGGAGE, PARCELS, ETC.

  1. Fresh Fruit, Fresh Vegetables, Fresh Mushrooms, and Nuts
    This section is hereby revoked and the following new section substituted therefor:

  3. Charges—Except as provided in paragraphs 2 and 3 hereof, fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, fresh mushrooms and nuts grown and packed in New Zealand (including Cook Islands or Niue), whether conveyed as excess luggage or consigned, will be charged on gross weight as follows:

(a) Consignments not exceeding 50 kg—
Up to 25 kg—half parcels rates on grouped weight.
Over 25 kg but not exceeding 50 kg—half parcels rates on grouped weight, charges on weight in excess of the first 25 kg being treated as a separate consignment.

(b) Consignments exceeding 50 kg—The first 50 kg will be charged in accordance with sub-clause (a) hereof and each 25 kg or part thereof in excess of the first 50 kg will be charged as a separate consignment at ordinary parcels rates, vide section 55, on grouped weight.

  1. Fresh fruit, vegetables, mushrooms or nuts in suitcases or similar containers are not considered “packed” in accordance with trade usage and will be charged on grouped weight at parcels rates.

  2. Fresh fruit, tomatoes and mushrooms packed in used cardboard boxes or in paper parcels will be charged on grouped weight at parcels rates.

  3. For the purposes of this section artichokes, beetroot, carrots, garlic, kumaras, marrows, melons, onions, parsnips, potatoes, sweet corn on cobs, and turnips are deemed to be fresh vegetables and will be charged accordingly.

  4. Terminal Charge—In addition to the foregoing charges, a charge of 30c for each 25 kg or part thereof will be made for fresh fruit, vegetables, mushrooms, or nuts consigned to the following stations:

Auckland North Island South Island
Hamilton (including Frankton) Palmerston North Christchurch
New Plymouth Wellington Dunedin
Hawera Petone Invercargill
Wanganui Lower Hutt Gracefield

  1. Grouped Weight—When more packages than one consisting of fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, fresh mushrooms, and nuts are consigned from one consignor to one consignee at the same destination station, such packages will be charged upon the total weight of each consignment.

  2. Conditions—(a) The provisions of this section will be applicable only to fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, fresh mushrooms, and nuts forwarded for the domestic use of the consignee, and will not apply to fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, fresh mushrooms, and nuts forwarded for sale or to be used or dealt with by the consignee for any purpose other than that mentioned. In every case the consignor shall endorse on the face of the consignment note, “certified for domestic use of consignee only”.

(b) The department reserves the right to decline to carry fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, fresh mushrooms, and nuts at these rates on any express or passenger train.

    This section is hereby revoked and the following new section substituted therefor:

  3. Books for exchange forwarded between subscribers and recognised circulating libraries will be carried at one-half parcels rates, with a minimum charge of 35c per package, under the following conditions:

(a) The sender’s name must be shown on each parcel.

(b) A declaration must be given on the consignment note that the package contains books or other articles specially authorised by the General Manager.

(c) A clear indication of the contents must be given on each package.

  1. The provisions of paragraph 1 of this section will be applicable in other cases authorised by the General Manager.

  2. The terminal charge specified in paragraph 4 of section 55 will not apply to parcels forwarded under this section. Consignees must take delivery at destination station.

    This section is hereby revoked and the following new section substituted therefor:

  5. Homing-pigeons sent to a station to be liberated for a race or liberated for training will, on production of a certificate as per paragraph 3 hereof, be charged as follows:

By goods trains .. .. .. Class C rates and conditions.
By express or passenger trains .. Ordinary parcels rates, computed on the separate weight of each container. (The weight in excess of 25 kg of any container will be charged separately at ordinary parcels rates.)
