ridge of high pressure extended onto the South Island from the Tasman Sea, and the strong cold southerly flow ahead of this ridge brought cold temperatures to the east coast of both islands from the 5th to the 8th. Rain was reported east of the main ranges with the heaviest falls in Wairarapa, Hawke’s Bay, Poverty Bay, and Wellington. By the 8th the ridge of high pressure had extended to the south of the country and pressures were low in the north Tasman Sea and to the east of the country. A depression in the Tasman Sea moved slowly east to pass north of the North Island on the 9th. An anticyclone had become established in the Tasman Sea late on the 9th and moved slowly east and persisted over New Zealand until the afternoon of the 12th. Isolated showers were reported in both Islands and temperatures were very cold on the east coast on the 9th and 10th. A complex low pressure area in the Tasman Sea was moving slowly towards New Zealand on the 13th, and crossed the country from the 14th to the 17th. Heavy rain was recorded in Taranaki, Manawatu, Poverty Bay, Nelson, Buller, and Westland, and lighter falls over the rest of the country during the passage of this system. Early on the 17th a ridge of high pressure extended from the Australian continent to the south of New Zealand with the high pressure centre moving east into the Tasman Sea. Pressures remained low to the north-east of the North Island and to the south of Tasmania. The anticyclone moved slowly south-east to

pass south of the country on the 19th, with the depression in the Tasman Sea moving east onto the North Island and crossing the country early on the 20th. Heavy falls of rain were recorded in Hawke’s Bay and Poverty Bay, and moderate falls over the southern half of the North Island. Temperatures were very cold in Wairarapa, Wellington, and the Kaikoura coast. A cold front associated with a depression passing south of the country moved onto the South Island on the 20th, and moved rapidly northwards. A ridge of high pressure extended onto the South Island early on the 22nd but weakened, with pressures falling to the south of New Zealand. A number of disturbances in a strong south-west flow onto the country brought heavy rain to the West Coast on the 22nd and 23rd. An anticyclone in the Tasman Sea extended a ridge of high pressure onto the South Island on the 25th and ahead of this ridge a strong southerly flow persisted until late on the 27th. Isolated showers were reported in both Islands. Temperatures were cold over most of the country especially on the east coast. The anticyclone moved onto the North Island on the 28th and brought fine weather to most areas. Cold fronts associated with a depression to the south of the country passed northwards onto the South Island late on the 29th, and on the 30th continued to move north onto the North Island. Heavy rain was recorded in Fiordland, Westland, and Buller.
