✨ Weather Report and Bankruptcy Notices
2 SEPTEMBER THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE 2051
North Otago and parts of Central Otago. In northern Hawke’s Bay and most of South Canterbury it was less than half the normal value.
Temperatures—Mean temperatures were mainly close to normal. The coldest days were the 2nd, 3rd, 17th, and 19th. On the 16th snow was reported well down on the hills of Nelson, Wellington and Wairarapa.
Sunshine—Sunshine was above normal in eastern districts of the North Island and in Canterbury by 20–50 hours. Gisborne was favoured with 184 hours, its highest July total in 40 years of observation. In western districts of both Islands and also on the Southland coast and in South Otago, sunshine was below normal by up to 45 hours. The King Country was worst affected, and Tauranga received only 58 hours.
WEATHER SEQUENCE
At the beginning of July a complex depression lay to the south-east of the South Island while an anticyclone covered Tasmania and south-east Australia. A small depression crossed the North Island, bringing rain to most districts there, especially Auckland, and also to parts of the South Island. On the following day this depression lay to the east of the North Island and rain was reported mainly in Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay, besides the Southland coast. Temperatures were very cold in the North Island. During the 3rd and 4th the anticyclone moved across the Tasman Sea, to pass just to the north of Northland. Showers were reported mainly in western districts from Taranaki northward, and temperatures became milder.
From the 5th to the 7th a depression over the North Tasman Sea moved eastward to become almost stationary just west of Taranaki, while pressures were high to the east. Rain commenced in Northland and spread southward over nearly all districts except the West Coast. Some considerable falls were reported in Auckland, Waikato, and Bay of Plenty, and there was some flooding around Auckland. Temperatures became cold in eastern districts of the South Island. During the 9th, as the second of the depression centres was crossing the North Island, another trough affected the South Island. Rain was reported in northern districts of the North Island and on the West Coast and the Southland coast. On the following day another trough in the general south-westerly flow brought more rain to the West Coast. As this trough moved on to the North Island on the 11th, a small depression formed on it and rain became general. By the 12th the depression was east of the North Island with cold temperatures there in the southerlies, but only scattered showers were reported, in both islands. On the following day an anticyclone over the Tasman Sea extended a ridge of high pressure over the North Island. Showers were reported in most western districts of both islands and about Foveaux Strait.
On the 14th a trough of low pressure associated with a very deep depression far to the south moved on to the South Island, bringing rain there in most districts, except near the east coast, where it was rather warm. During the 15th and 16th this trough continued its north-eastward movement over the country, while a depression off the Queensland coast moved rapidly across the Tasman Sea, crossing New Zealand near Cook Strait. A major storm developed in this area, with winds reaching storm and occasionally hurricane force from Kaikoura to Stephens Island and Wellington. The rain became general but soon cleared on the West Coast. Some considerable falls were reported in Nelson and in southern districts of the North Island. Temperatures became very cold and snow was reported on the hills in some districts, especially around Nelson and Wellington. From the 17th to the 19th the depression continued its south-eastward movement towards the Chatham Islands, while an anticyclone was centred south of Adelaide. In the southerly to south-westerly winds the rain became lighter and at times scattered, but temperatures remained cold.
By the 20th the anticyclone was centred to the north of Adelaide and pressures were still low to the east of the country. Winds became south-westerly to westerly over the South Island and another deep depression passed far to the south while the associated trough crossed New Zealand. Temperatures became warmer and rain covered most of the South Island, besides southern and some western districts of the North Island. Conditions became even more westerly on the following day, with rain affecting mainly the West Coast and the Foveaux Strait area. From the 22nd to the 26th the anticyclone moved from New South Wales and Victoria across the North Tasman Sea to pass to the north of the North Island. This was a period of mainly settled weather.
From the 27th to the 29th a depression near Lord Howe Island moved southward across the Tasman and then eastward over the South Island. Rain was general in both Islands west of the ranges and temperatures were milder. During the last two days of the month the depression was centred to the east, now with two centres. The weather continued rather unsettled, with light rain except in Gisborne and northern and central Hawkes Bay.
