2744 THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE No. 122

CLIMATOLOGICAL TABLE—Summary of the Records of Temperature, Rainfall, and Sunshine for October 1976—continued

settled weather over the North Island, and on most days the rain
extended also over the South Island, except for Otago and South-
land. Cold temperatures were again reported in eastern districts
of the South Island. During the next two days this depression
continued to move away to the east but another centre crossed
Northland. Rain was reported in northern and eastern districts of
the North Island and also on the West Coast.

A slow-moving trough of low pressure moved on to the country
from the west on the 22nd and rain was reported mainly in North-
land and on the West Coast. On the following day this trough,
together with a small associated depression, crossed the North
Island with light rain there. On the 24th, while this depression still
lay east of the North Island, another trough of low pressure
moved on to the South Island, causing rain on the West Coast and
in parts of Southland. During the next two days a depression
crossed the South Island with an associated trough of low pressure,

followed by a change to very cold southerlies. Strong to gale
north-westerlies brought considerable rain at first to western
districts. The southerlies brought showers to many districts,
especially in the east, and in the South Island the 26th was the
coldest day of the month.

From the 27th to the 29th an anticyclone moved across the
country and only isolated showers were reported. On the last two
days of the month a depression passed just to the north of North-
Island while an anticyclone moved slowly eastward past Campbell
Island, and a weak trough of low pressure moved over the South
Island. Some rain was reported over most of the North Island and
also in Fiordland, Southland and Otago.
