β¨ Weather Summary and Government Notices
2 OCTOBER THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE 2209 eastern districts of the South Island. On the 7th and 8th this trough crossed the remainder of the country and winds changed to cold southerlies with some rain in the east of the South Island and over most of the North Island.
From the 9th to the 11th an anticyclone moved eastward across the North Island while depressions again passed to the south. Considerable rain was once more reported in western districts while eastern districts enjoyed warm temperatures. With the development of a depression over the Tasman on the following day some rain was also reported in Northland and Bay of Plenty. As this complex depression crossed the North Island from the 13th to the 15th rain was fairly general, with some heavy falls in northern districts of both islands. However, the weather started to clear on the 15th. During the 2 following days a weak ridge of high pressure passed across the North Island. Light showers were reported in a number of districts.
From the 18th to the 20th a complex depression crossed the country while an anticyclone developed to the south-west. Rain was general with some heavy falls, especially in Canterbury, where flooding was reported around and south of Christchurch. Temperatures became cold in the east of the South Island. Somewhat similar conditions persisted during the next 4 days but with less rain as the anticyclone remained centred near Campbell Island, while a series of small depressions crossed the country.
On the 25th and 26th an anticyclone over New South Wales was moving eastward while pressures were low to the east and south. Light showers were reported in many districts but temperatures were warmer than previously. Conditions remained somewhat similar on the following day with a complex depression extending over Tasmania and part of the South Tasman Sea and frontal systems from it affecting New Zealand, However, more rain was reported in central districts. On the 28th one centre moved across Cook Strait while a second deeper centre was situated west of Southland. An anticyclone was centred near Campbell Island. The warm front from this depression brought rain to most of the country. Temperatures became cold in the South Island with snow to quite low levels. Heavy rain caused flooding in parts of Manawatu. During the last 3 days of the month the depression west of Southland moved eastward and another smaller depression also crossed the country. Westerlies brought rain mainly west of the ranges with thunderstorms at times, while temperatures became warmer over the South Island.
